Actually what happened was that, for some reason, my localhost interface (127.0.0.1) was not set up properly.
I fixed that and now things appear to start correctly.

Another possible issue could be if you have incorrect network settings. Namely, /etc/hostname, /etc/resolv.conf may conflict.

Actually I have no firewall on that box. The epmd daemon runs and listens on port 4369. In fact epmd stays running after ejabbberd crashes. I am also able to telnet into port 4369 from outside and have it connected...

I've reproduced this crash by closing TCP port 4369 (it's a port for epmd - erlang portmap daemon) via firewall. So, I guess you have firewall enabled on localhost. Disable it and ejabberd will start.
