I logged in and out several times, and the session was always closed. So the problem you describe doesn't seem easy to reproduce.

Maybe your are interested in this option, which was included in ejabberd 2.0.0:

The special access max_user_sessions specifies the maximum number of sessions (authenticated connections) per user. If a user tries to open more sessions by using different resources, the first opened session will be disconnected.

Wed, 02 Apr 2008 00:39:05 +0000 mfoss comment 52084 at https://www.ejabberd.im I am using ejabber 1.1.4 https://www.ejabberd.im/node/2914#comment-52076
No, we are using only one client – Pandion. When user logs out sometimes connection is not closed. When he logs in back a new connection is opened.

I am worried because everyday the number of connections per user are increasing.

I am using ejabber 1.1.4

What do yo suggest how can I remove the unwanted connection. If use the kill command it kills only the current session not the old connections.
Sat, 29 Mar 2008 06:39:22 +0000 ashish comment 52076 at https://www.ejabberd.im Jabber allows multiple sessions https://www.ejabberd.im/node/2914#comment-52032
In Jabber, a user can connect several times to his account if he provides different resources. So, an account can have several sessions simultaneously.

If you want to limit the number of sessions a user can have with his account, you could use the option max_user_sessions in ejabberd 2.0.0 and newer.
Wed, 19 Mar 2008 22:04:49 +0000 mfoss comment 52032 at https://www.ejabberd.im
