Yes, a new protocol is needed -- this is how I understand it too. Our chatrooms form a layer on top of Jabber and isn't as such an extension of the protocol. So, to answer your question: unfortunately not. Sorry for being a bit vague, but I can't say too much.

The mod_muc module isn't enabled on MXit, in other words, you can't create chatrooms this way (read the next paragraph, though). Also, there isn't support for MUC in the MXit client, which means that a person using MXit don't have the ability to browse for chatrooms or join them.

A correction: You don't pay for downloading MXit or for communicating with contacts in your roster. You only pay per message (2c ZAR) or command (variable) within the chatrooms.

To create chatroom you should join it by any Jabber client (Exodus should be OK).

To make room persistent (don't disappear when the last person leaves) you should configure it (I don't know how to do it exactly using Exodus).

I don't know how to use created chatroom in MXit, but what I actually get from MXit web site is thet MXit is NOT a Jabber client and users pay for messages they send.

So instead of using MXit I would recommend to use real Jabber client for mobiles (e.g. Bombus).
Using it you pay for GPRS traffic only.
