That might help you out with clustering... but for me, I didn't have to modify any start/configuration files at all... leave them alone.

You could always install from binary - 2.1.8 was simple and installs to /opt/, quite frankly it was painless and I got clustering up in about 2 minutes.

What can I do, if you don't provide any other clue that allows me to continue suggesting ideas?

I can only remember you the golden rule: stop, uninstall, remove. Then install from zero.

but ejabberd1 is just an example
i've set ERLAND_NODE=ejabberd@(my-machine-name)
then ejabberd cannot start
what should i do?

The name of your machine is ejabberd1? I guess it isn't

$ uname -n
machine3

and then
ERLAND_NODE=ejabberd@machine3
