xml error after installation

I've set up ejabberd successfully on linux/debian, and have modified the /etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.cfg file to add my host and admin user. however, going to my site's http://example.com:5222/admin page (or the root page on :5222) gives me an XML error:

<?xml version='1.0'?><stream:stream xmlns='jabber:client' xmlns:stream='http://etherx.jabber.org/streams' id='none' from='localhost' version='1.0'><stream:error><xml-not-well-formed xmlns='urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-streams'/></stream:error></stream:stream>

Any idea of what I might be doing wrong?
