I'm not very sure if this is the correct place to ask. I run a ejabberd server and of course I have a jabberd account there. I'm able to add and talk with gtalk users but I've noticed that they see my nickname as 'stella'. This is included in my vcard in the field firstname. Even if I change my firstname, the nickname still appears as 'stella' to gtalk users. I'm just wondering how gtalk defines a jabber's account nickname. Is there any way to change it?

If you try other Jabber clients like Psi, Gajim, Tkabber, Jabbim, you will notice some of them implement a similar feature. If I remember correctly, some of them assign the nickname in the roster/contactlist when adding the contact to the roster. So, the contact will remain with the nickname that was assigned when it was added.
Do you expect that a Jabber client checks periodically the nicknames of all your contacts? With what periodicity: every time you login, every day, every hour, every second...?
Also, if nicknames of your contacts in your roster can be continually modified by your contacts, it could become a surprise each day.
I guess client developers go the easy and rational way, and the nickname is automatically assigned only when the contact is added. After that, only the roster owner can change the nickname of the contacts.
